On 4^th July, 1939, we had a special visitor who further reinforced our founder’s vision to produce essential medicines and make India self-sufficient in healthcare.

Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to Cipla was a momentous occasion not just for the company but also for Dr. K. A Hamied. This ordinary afternoon turned into one that would never be forgotten!

Mahatma Gandhi’s words: ‘I was delighted to visit this Indian enterprise’, have been immortalised across several Cipla offices with a statue.

A New Generation Emerges

The 1960s brought with them a wave of new ideas and pioneering innovations as our founder’s son, Dr. Y. K. Hamied, joined Cipla in 1961.

This young scientist, armed with a PhD from Cambridge University, was eager to bring about changes. With him at the forefront, Cipla played a pivotal role in pioneering API manufacturing (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients, commonly known as bulk drugs) in India.

These efforts didn’t just transform India’s pharma landscape; they went on to make essential medicines more accessible across the globe.

Pioneering Inhalation Therapy

Cipla has been a trailblazer in respiratory care since the 1960s, helping millions breathe easier for over six decades.

A landmark moment came in 1972 when we introduced our first indigenously developed inhaler. This was followed by many more products that forever changed how asthma and COPD were treated in India!

Golden Era of Growth

1985 brought with it a new era of growth and innovation for Cipla. We celebrated our Golden Jubilee! The crowning achievement came when all 3 of our manufacturing facilities received US FDA approval!

We were among the first few pharmaceutical plants in the country to gain this recognition. Several critical bulk drugs as well as  formulations were being made to international standards and, for the first time, being professionally promoted and marketed.

Care That Goes Beyond Cure

Cipla provides care even when there is no cure. In 1997, we laid the foundation for a first-of-its-kind palliative care centre in India.

The Cipla Palliative Care and Training Centre in Pune was established  to provide holistic care to individuals facing advanced stages of cancer and support to their families.

What started off as a dream for a single centre to provide comfort to those in need, has now expanded with partnerships and collaborations with 36 partners in 38 cities across India.

Cipla’s work in palliative care encapsulates our purpose of #CaringforLife, providing #CareBeyondCure to those who need it.

An Offer That Changed The World

In the late 1990s, the HIV/AIDS crisis was at an all-time high with a few treatment options available but at sky-rocketing prices. It was a death sentence for millions simply because they could not afford the treatment available. 

In 2001, Cipla made a landmark offer that shook the world. At a time when medication was available only at sky-rocketing prices, we offered the world’s first ever recommended 3-in-1 fixed-dose combination at less than $1 per day!

This historic offer changed the landscape of treatment for developing countries, and how generics were viewed across the world.

Taking Care Across Borders

Cipla’s foray towards international growth was through our first global acquisition in South Africa in 2013.

We then went on to acquire two companies in the USA in early 2016, to access local markets, government, and institutional businesses.

This was just the beginning as a new era of growth commenced!
